Kaleidoscope woes

In April, I took a kaleidoscope class with Sujata Shah called Organized Chaos. I made all the blocks with some extra for a bigger quilt than the pattern. I put them on the wall. I tried to make the flower blooms, every other block. I realized that I did not cut enough big triangles to make these. I don't have any more fabric on most of these to cut the bigger triangles. I did not realize I needed  at least twelve of the color when making the bloom. I am sort of stuck. Maybe I can find fabric close to the blocks I want to bloom. I would have chosen fabric differently had I known how this whole thing works. I am too far into it now to quit. My design wall is occupied and stalled. I wish I lived close to Maureen!

You should be able to use other fabrics of the same color and value to finish the blooms on most of them. The only way you will know they aren't matching is if you are up close to it. If they read the same from 5 feet away it will work.

Number one....follow Wanda's advice and you can't go wrong.
Number two...I follow the every other block for the flower blooms, but not the part about needing 12 of the color. Exactly which part needs 12?
This pattern needs lots of variety I think. don't give up.

At first I didn't quite get what you meant until i realized you have two of them blooming close to the top and now can see what a difference it makes. Yup, Wanda has good advice. Whatever you do it still will be great.

I hate that too-far-in-to-quit-but-too-far-from-a-finish feeling. It is such an interesting top that it surely is worth working on. Maybe let it rest right on the wall where it is and think about something different for a while. Perhaps inspiration will strike or just the right fabric will come along.

What about controlled scrappy? wanda is right -- try it, take photos from a distance, and see. You can do this!

First of all this is a stunner!!! As Wanda says, you don't have to worry about not having enough triangles in one fabric, substitute, it all adds to the beauty of the quilt.

i concur with everyone else. Start cutting out the colors here and there and audition them.
If you really really need something in particular, post photos of them and your blog friends will help - I will if I can.

You can do this! You said that you "don't have more fabric on most of these to cut the bigger triangles." You could start with ones that you DO have more fabric for - then - like Wanda said - go for same color and value on the rest. It will look terrific and no one will ever know that you didn't plan it that way all along - because we'll never tell - ;))

It's looking good. Can you buy a fabric in the same color but different pattern to supplement?

Dear Linda,
Everyone above is right. As we discussed in the class, you do not need the same fabrics to make the stars. Something similar, a closer shade of the same color will do just fine. Pick the colors from your stash and see if they co ordinate with the blocks. You could also turn the hexagons to switch the corners. This is turning out to be a stunning quilt. And, you can email me with your pictures, I will be more than happy to help anyway I can. xo
