Three finishes, kind of, sort of...

     Due to all the rain we have been having, it has been hard to photo some quilts outside. Today, there was a break, so I rushed out and did the job.
     The first quilt is one from our guild that was cut out as a kit to make for our local VA hospital. We want to have 50 quilts by Veterans Day. I added an extra row around because it needed that neutral on the outside edge. Except for the center squares, it is all made from brick shapes. My mom helped sew the short edges of all the bricks, and then I assembled all the blocks and top. I made a scrappy binding because I thought it looked better than what I was given.

     The second vet quilt was made by another guild member and I quilted it. She wanted to trim it herself, so it is not all done.

     The last quilt is from the other half of the HSTs made from the Shirbori layer cake. This one is asymmetrical. I made the borders real wide so that  it can be used on a twin bed. It needs backing and quilting.

     My quilt guild made up kits from donated fabric for a goal of 40 veteran quilts by Veterans Day. I took 4 kits, and this is the layout for the 2 x 3 1/2" bricks block. I am going to sew a border of neutral bricks around the whole thing I decided. Just can't stick to a premade kit.

Red, White and Blue for a veteran

     I don't often make red, white and blue quilts. However, a man who is our town supervisor- is a veteran who actively is involved in veteran activities. He was also a history teacher and is a true public servant. I found out this week that he had emergency heart surgery out of no where- just went for a check up and wham! Although I have comfort quilts on hand, I think he needed a red, white and blue. And quick.
    I looked through all patterns that I have earmarked on the computer and thought that this 5 Star from Mary's quilts would just be perfect. There were not a whole lot of directions there. It also gave me an excuse, um, reason to buy a 6.5" Bloc Loc Ruler for the HSTs. I had all the fabric from my stash except the border. I made sure I cut everything out, sewed all the components and pressed before assembling. I used the webbing technique taught by Wanda, Exuberant Color,  to put it together. Now I have to finish the quilt on the long arm and get this one on pronto.
