One of the best things about Ogunquit is that it has sandy beaches for miles to the north and rocky coast paths to the south. The hotel we stayed at, The Beachmere, sits on the boundary between both. So, you can walk the beaches for many miles, or take the Marginal Way along the rocks to Perkins Cove to see boats, shops and eat. All without driving. The views are stunning and the salty air clears up my head. I took about 250 photos and did a lot of sketching. I also caught a gorgeous sunset I will show another time.
The sketches after the photos are done in watercolor and pencils, about 5 x 7, on location. I don't like to paint outdoors because the light changes so much, so I do sketches and take photos to paint later. I had a crazy experience with people wanting to buy the sketches and asking a million questions.
Our room was just below the 2 blue umbrellas, where the line of flowers are. Photo taken from beach towards rocks. At the green bush level is The Marginal Way path. |
The coast where the inn is on the rocks. |
The view from the inn towards the beach north to Wells |
Parts of the beach are crowded, but the further out from the parking, the less people and unbrellas. I only like walking on the beach. |
End of Marginal Way, Perkins Cove coming into view. |
From rocky coast, looking to beach to the north. |
The ocean, how calming |

Your sketches are beautiful! I can't wait to get to Maine in a few weeks.
So much inspiration — your sketches are wonderful!!!!!
Wonderful. I love your sketches too....and would have made offer too! In another life you could be a beach artist:) The week of sea and calming places sounds grand.
Your photos bring back memories of my one and only tip to Maine over 25 years ago. My kids were preteens then and they LOVED frolicking in the FRIGID water that was so cold I didn't even want to put my feet in. We visited many beaches both sandy and rocky - so beautiful - just like your pictures, but there was no traffic then and hardly anyone on the beaches even though it was mid July. Your excellent drawings capture the constant motion of the wind and waves. No wonder fellow vacationers tried to buy them!
Love your sketches!! I had to laugh when I read the photo descriptions of the coast to the NORTH with the ocean on the right - here in California - it's "reversed" - the coast to the SOUTH has the ocean on the right - LOL - ;))
Love your sketches! I see why people wanted to buy them!! you can now be the "Quilting beach Sketch artist" !!!
What a splendid place to holiday and great sketches Linda, not surprising that folks were interested and so good to know that they were asking about purchasing!
Lovely sketches. Hubby's uncle paints wherever he is. He frequently has people offer to purchase what he is working on.
